We all aim to lead more organised lives. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done. Sometimes. as much as you try, the lack of time or energy might prevent you from becoming the perfectly organised person you would like to be. It could be hard to do that, especially if you don’t know where to start. In this article, we would like to share some rules that will help you reach that neat life.

  1. Have a designated place for everything
There is one difference between the people that always lose their keys, wallets etc. and those that rarely misplace anything. That would be the designated spot for everything. Simply make sure all your items “live” in the same spot at all times. Always return everything to the place you took it from.
  2. Turn your mess into order
Even if you are naturally messy, you can make your mess look intentional. Simply group all your possessions by category. Stash loose items (like shoes or gloves) in baskets or boxes by the door. You can put all your remotes on the coffee table as well. Avoid letting them spread around.
  3. Use the bag up method
Keep a big shopping bag or a box around. Whenever you decide you no longer need or want an item, put it in there. Donate all items whenever the box/bag is full. By doing this, if you ever decide you miss something, you can always go retrieve it.
  4. Hooks are your friends
Install hooks everywhere in your house. You can never have too many hooks. Put them on doors, walls, tables and anywhere you might find them useful. Instead of throwing your keys on the couch in the living room where they would get lost rather quickly, hang them on a designated hook by the door.
  5. Add one remove one method
Whenever you bring a new item into your home, remove one from the things that you already own. Even if it is a new toy, book or a piece of clothing, take a look around and see if you already have anything similar. If not, get rid of something you no longer need or rarely use. That way you will prevent clutter and mess from occurring.
  6. Go wild with your storage containers
Feel free to use items that are not designated for storage to store items that fit in them. For example, instead of trying to balance your umbrellas in a corner behind the door, use a tall vase to put them into. You can also reuse old shoe boxes instead of throwing them away.
  7. Take a minimalistic approach
The fewer things you own, the easier it is to stay organised. Only keep things that you really need and use on a regular basis. Buy fewer new items and try reusing asw many items as you can for various purposes.
  8. Keep a single junk drawer
Junk drawers are a must have in every house. However, you should make sure not to have more than one. Pay attention that it is not too big and restrict it to necessities. Prevent it from getting too full. Only keep things that are useful but difficult to categorise. If your junk drawer is full, take the time to sort and reorganise the items in it.
  9. Use the matryoshka method
Simply store smaller items into bigger ones. Take plastic bags or boxes, for example. Instead of piling them up or just having them around, store them in each other. By stacking everything together you will not only save space but also make it easier to organise and find items when needed. You can do that with suitcases, purses and handbags as well.
  10. Play around with storage products
Tackle boxes might be meant for storing fishing equipment but you can use them for pretty much anything. Store makeup, jewelry or art supplies. Use your book shelves for shoes or handbags.
  11. Door shoe bags are a gem
Use them to store anything that you frequently use and need to be easily accessible. You can store your cleaning supplies, hair tools and more.
  12. Vertical storage is your friend
If you are short on storage space, use the tops of high places, such as your refrigerator or cabinets. Since you will be needing a stool to reach up there, use them for storing items that you don’t use so often.
  13. Never enough decluttering
Never stop decluttering. Use every spare minute to get rid of items that you don’t really need. Do not wait for your place to become full of clutter and unwanted items.
  14. Built-in storage spaces
If you’re buying furniture, look for beds, benched and others that have built-in storage spaces. That will help you make the most out of the little storage space that you have at home. This is the most efficient way to do so.
  15. Don’t be too sentimental towards items
It is easy to get attached and assign sentimental value to items we own. Keep in mind that this will prevent you from getting rid of unnecessary clutter. Remind yourself that every item is just an item.
